Celebrating Halloween isn’t just about costumes, parties or trick-or-treating, but also doing the freakiest projects ever. Examples are decorations and posters to enliven the Halloween spirit. Posters are made to grab attention, so the typical one-dimensional poster just won’t cut it. For truly eye-catching design, you’ll want your posters to be three-dimensional; 3D posters are more realistic and will heighten the emotion being conveyed. Professional artists create three-dimensional realism by adding subtle effects like drop shadows, blended shading and a huge color palette, but you can do it very simply with a few easy strategies. Follow the steps below to turn a drab Halloween poster into an exciting 3D masterpiece.
Do your research. Select an image you want in your poster. This could be anything related to Halloween such as bats, vampires, zombies, witches, ghosts and werewolves. You can use magazine cut-outs or old Halloween posters. If you want to search online and make use of digital images, you can download it and open in Photoshop (you can download a demo version for free). Remove the background as neatly as possible. Distorted or dirty digital images will not help create a good 3D effect. Gather all the materials you need: black poster paper, cardboard or foam poster; pencil, paste; heavy construction paper and square foam shapes. Take the black poster paper and lay it on a flat surface like a table or the floor. You can also make use of cardboard or foam poster paper, then sketch the poster elements using a pencil. You do not have to sketch a lot of detail since this is only a temporary place holder for the final elements. Gather the images you found in Step 1 and paste them onto the heavy construction paper. This adds volume to the image. Take some square foam and stick it to the back of the construction paper to add depth to the image. Make a second image identical to the first and repeat the steps above. Layer your image elements by sticking one element to the other, but slightly off the left or right. You can add text to the poster but make sure that the letters do not take focus away from the 3D image at the center of the poster. This is also a good time to add other elements such as creepy trees, bushes, a haunted house, or lightning bolts. Adding accents to the poster can be done by using poster paint/oil crayon/glitter glue. If no glitter glue is available, you can use plain white glue and sprinkle some glitter powder on it before it dries up.
Now you have a 3D poster for your Halloween party. Display it and freak everyone out!
